Mark Cuban Fined $600K For Podcast Comments

We previously discussed Dr. J’s new podcast, “House Call w/ Dr. J” and the importance of big names starting podcasts. One of the biggest reasons is ACCESS! Access to people and information, especially from a sports legend like Dr. J. On his first episode, Dr. J spoke with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and the conversation stirred quite a bit of controversy and led to the NBA fining Cuban $600,000 the next day.

Cuban, who is known for being outspoken at times, was quoted on the show saying…
“I’m probably not supposed to say this, but, like, I just had dinner with a bunch of our guys the other night, and here we are, you know, we weren’t competing for the playoffs. I was like, ‘Look, losing is our best option,’ ” Cuban said. “Adam would hate hearing that, but I at least sat down and I explained it to them. And I explained what our plans were going to be this summer, that we’re not going to tank again. This was, like, a year-and-a-half of tanking, and that was too brutal for me. But being transparent, I think that’s the key to being kind of a players’ owner and having stability.”
This was shocking to hear come out of Cuban’s mouth, not because we didn’t understand that “tanking” is a real part of the NBA, but that he said it on the record. This is the value of influential figures creating platforms. If Mark Cuban was speaking on a normal Dallas radio show, it’s doubtful that he would feel the need to divulge this information. However, when you are talking to Dr. J, especially on his first new podcast, it’s natural that you want to provide headline quality content. We’re pretty sure that Mark Cuban’s wallet will be just fine!
